If you consider the size of your ankle relative to the rest of your body, you begin to understand the amazing engineering behind this joint.
Your ankle, which provides movement and stability, is made up of:
+ Bones, including your tibia, fibula, and talus
+ Tendons, including your Achilles, the largest tendon in your body
+ Ligaments
+ Muscles
These components work together like a hinge, giving you mobility while providing the necessary strength to carry your body.
Due to the enormous amount of pressure your ankles are under, it’s not surprising that they’re susceptible to pain and injury, including:
+ Ankle sprain
+ Tendinitis
+ Achilles tendon tear or rupture
+ Arthritis
+ Fracture
+ Bursitis
Ankle pain can be caused by an acute injury, or develop over time due to wear and tear and repetitive stresses.
At the first signs of ankle pain you should turn to the RICE treatment:
+ Rest
+ Ice
+ Compression
+ Elevation
The goal of RICE is to reduce any swelling as quickly as possible. If your ankle hasn’t improved after 24-48 hours, or it’s worsened, it’s time to make an appointment with Dr. Gorin.
As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Gorin has seen his fair share of ankle injuries and chronic problems. To come up with the best treatment plan for your situation and goals, Dr. Gorin reviews your symptoms and uses diagnostic imaging to determine your next steps, which may include:
+ Anti-inflammatory medications
+ Physical therapy
+ Corticosteroid injections
+ Bracing, booting, or crutches
If you have a soft tissue injury, such as an Achilles tendon tear or ankle sprain, you need to be patient and allow your tissue time to heal. If you have a fracture, Dr. Gorin may have to surgically repair it, or he may simply stabilize your ankle with a cast or boot.
If you’re active and your Achilles tendon is ruptured, the best treatment is for Dr. Gorin to repair it arthroscopically.
