What is the anatomy of the shoulder?

Your shoulder is a classic ball-and-socket joint where two bones connect, allowing an incredible range of motion. In the case of your shoulder, the bones connecting are your humerus (upper arm) and scapula (shoulder blade). These bones are then connected to your shoulder joint to your clavicle (collarbone).

Holding all this in place are crucial connective tissues made up of muscles and tendons. The most important of these is your rotator cuff, which keeps your arm firmly centered in your shoulder socket. Your shoulder socket is where cartilage comes together to form your labrum, ringing the outer edge of the socket to give it more strength and stability.

In between these major players are small, but important components called bursae that provide lubrication. While they may be small in size, when they’re inflamed they can cause big problems.

What causes shoulder pain?

The most common causes of shoulder pain are:

+ Bursitis
+ Rotator cuff strains or tears
+ Tendinitis
+ Fracture
+ Arthritis
+ Dislocation
+ Labral tear

How is shoulder pain treated?

Relying on his expertise as an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Gorin performs diagnostic testing to determine the cause of your shoulder pain. He then develops a treatment plan that provides relief for your pain and helps you regain function in your shoulder.

His goal in all musculoskeletal problems is to find the least invasive solution possible, so he typically starts you off with nonsurgical treatments such as:

+ Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
+ Physical therapy
+ Corticosteroid injections

If your shoulder problem requires surgical intervention, rest assured that Dr. Gorin has a number of options, most of which he performs arthroscopically. These include:

+ Rotator cuff repair
+ Labral, or SLAP, repair
+ Bankart repair to stabilize your labrum
+ Shoulder resurfacing
+ Shoulder replacement

When it comes to soft tissue, Dr. Gorin is able to use arthroscopic techniques to restore strength, movement, and stability.

Shoulder replacement and resurfacing are great solutions for cases of osteoarthritis where your cartilage has worn down completely. Whether Dr. Gorin replaces or resurfaces your shoulder joint, his goal is to allow your bones to glide together smoothly again.

After any of these procedures, Dr. Gorin works with you to rehabilitate properly, protecting you against future problems.

Don’t live with shoulder pain any longer than you have to. Call the Institute of Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics or book an appointment online today.
