What are the most common causes of knee pain?

Your knees are not only the largest joints in your body, they are some of the most versatile, allowing you to twist, pivot, climb, and go side to side, as well as forward and back. As if that weren’t enough, your knees are some of your body’s best shock absorbers, giving you the ability to jump, land, and pull up short without severely damaging your bones.

Your knee’s versatility, however, is often its downfall. Because you rely on it so heavily, knee pain can occur if you push your limits or wear and tear start to take their toll. The most common sources of knee pain include:

+ Arthritis
+ Fracture
+ Ligament strain or tear, such as an ACL tear
+ Bursitis
+ Tendinitis
+ Meniscus strain or tear
+ Chondromalacia patella (runner’s knee)

While bone fractures can and do happen, most knee pain comes from the soft connective tissue in your knee, like your ligaments, or the soft tissue that provides cushioning within your knee, such as your meniscus or bursae.

When should I see a doctor for my knee pain?

If you’ve injured your knee or your knee is beginning to ache, the first order of business is to relieve the swelling and pain. To do this, turn to the RICE method:

+ Rest
+ Ice
+ Compression
+ Elevation

If, after a day or two, your symptoms aren’t any better, or they become worse, it’s time to make your appointment at the Institute of Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics.

How is knee pain treated?

As an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Gorin has extensive experience diagnosing and treating knee pain. Dr. Gorin’s starts out conservatively with one or more of the following treatments:

+ Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
+ Physical therapy
+ Bracing or crutches
+ Corticosteroid injections

If your knee pain proves unresponsive to these measures, Dr. Gorin may turn to knee arthroscopy to diagnose and repair your problem, including:

+ Total knee arthroscopy
+ Knee replacement
+ Meniscus repair surgery
+ ACL surgery
+ Dislocated patella

Arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive, requiring only small incisions, and it allows Dr. Gorin to repair what’s needed without resorting to more invasive measures. To help you heal faster, he uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy after your surgery.

Another part your healing process is, the rehabilitation Dr. Gorin provides to help you recover quickly and with enough strength to prevent future injuries.
