Your knee is the largest joint in your body, and not only does it allow you an incredible range of motion, from twisting and pivoting to climbing and walking, it also performs yeoman’s work as a shock absorber.
At the foundation of this shock absorption are small wedge-shaped pieces of cartilage called your menisci. Each knee has two menisci, which are located between your shinbones and your thighbones.
Your menisci are not only imperative for cushioning, but also provide valuable stability in your knee.
Most meniscus injuries occur as a result of physical activity, with sports the main culprit. If you think about the stresses you put your knee under when you’re playing a sport, like squatting and twisting, you begin to understand the enormous strain these small pieces of cartilage endure.
When the stress becomes too great, your meniscus can tear. If you’re very active, it’s likely that your menisci have already degenerated to some degree, making them especially prone to injury.
As you get older, it takes even less for your meniscus to tear — a simple misstep on the stairs can cause an injury.
Dr. Gorin specializes in arthroscopic surgery, especially arthroscopic knee surgery, so you’re in good hands. After diagnosing your injury and determining the extent of the damage, Dr. Gorin may recommend one of three surgeries:
Meniscus repair
Dr. Gorin inserts a tiny camera into the area to get a better look at the injured meniscus and then threads small surgical instruments through another incision to repair your meniscus by suturing the tear.
Partial meniscectomy
In this procedure, Dr. Gorin goes in arthroscopically and trims away the damaged area of your meniscus.
Meniscectomy
With a meniscectomy, Dr. Gorin removes your entire meniscus if it’s beyond repair.
While Dr. Gorin is highly adept in the field of arthroscopic knee surgery, he also takes the time to ensure you heal properly with the help of regenerative medicine, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapies.
Dr. Gorin also emphasizes good physical therapy after your surgery to help strengthen your knee, taking the stress off your meniscus to help prevent re-injury.
