PRP therapy is fast becoming a popular treatment tool in orthopaedic circles to address joint problems, as well as to promote faster healing after surgery.
Your blood contains four ingredients:
+ White blood cells
+ Red blood cells
+ Platelets
+ Plasma
Your platelets are largely responsible for clotting, but they also contain hundreds of proteins, or growth factors, that accelerate healing.
To isolate your platelets, Dr. Gorin draws your blood and places it in a centrifuge. Once he separates out your platelets, he mixes the concentrate back into your plasma and then injects the resulting mixture into areas that could benefit from growth factors to encourage regeneration and healing.
Stem cell therapy is another form of regenerative medicine that utilizes the powerful healing resources of the human body.
The human stem cell is fascinating because of its ability to become other cells. Most cells in your body are designed for one purpose and multiply and regenerate for that sole purpose. However, your stem cells are undifferentiated and can travel to wherever they’re needed, become the necessary cell, and then multiply indefinitely as that type of cell.
Stem cells are strongest during embryonic development as they help shape a fetus in the womb. These stem cells are found in the embryo, the amniotic fluid surrounding a fetus, and in the umbilical cord blood.
As you grow older, you still have stem cells in your body, but they aren’t as strong or as numerous as they once were.
With stem cell therapy, Dr. Gorin utilizes these cells to help your damaged tissue regenerate faster to promote faster healing. Dr. Gorin uses stem cells from three sources:
+ Your own body, which are analogous
+ Amniotic stem cells
+ Umbilical cord blood
To determine which option is best for you, Dr. Gorin sits down with you to discuss your unique health situation and treatment goals.
Dr. Gorin turns to stem cell and PRP therapy anytime soft tissue could use a regenerative and healing boost. This could help joints with degenerative conditions like arthritis, or help your body heal more quickly after a surgery.
Dr. Gorin also uses both therapies for tendon, muscle, and ligament tears.
